I reassembled the shift tower into the transmission and re-adjusted the cables with the knowledge of where the L lock was supposed to be. I was setting the cables with the shift tower too low). Nothing looked damaged or out of place so I function tested the shift tower and noticed that what I believed was the "home" position with the L lock was actually higher than what I was trying to set it at (i.e. I ended up pulling the shift tower assembly out of the transmission and inspecting it as well as taking a look down inside the transmission. I don't see how working on the 5th gear end would have an effect on 2nd gear but it is more data. I reinstalled the 2 bolts and spring washers and the outer selector ring and then buttoned the transmission back up. After several hours of work and a broken puller I gave up without ever having gotten the 5th gear selector "gear" off of the end of the shaft.
#Vw o2j shift tower upgrade
**Full disclosure, before I installed the transmission I did attempt to upgrade 5th gear to a lower ratio. I'm already too far in to back out now, but if I have to pull this transmission out again I don't want to put any more time into hooking things up or burn up any more 1-time use bolts. I then disconnected the cables entirely and manually tried to place the shift tower on the transmission into 2nd gear but it will not go in.ĭoes anyone have any thoughts? I don't know if this is related to the "L" lock no longer functioning or if it is a sign of something much bigger. I tried adjusting the cable again but same result. I got into the car and removed the shifter lock pin and tested out the shifter to see how it felt in each gear and noticed that I could not seem to select 2nd gear. I tried simply holding the mechanism down and adjusting the cables which initially seemed to work. It will turn up and slide in as expected but when I release pressure on the shift tower it will not stay down. I now have the transmission in the car and I was trying to adjust the shifter cables but now the "L" lock no longer functions. In the process of lubricating things and moving the transmission around I moved the shift tower assembly into multiple gear locations (I did not intentionally check for engagement in each position) with no issue.
#Vw o2j shift tower code
I bought the donor from a wrecked ~2000 New Beetle ~151k with transmission code ERJ.īefore installing the transmission I tested the functionality of the "L" lock on the shift tower on the transmission and it worked properly. To make a long story short, I am in the middle of a 01M to 02J swap on my 03 Golf.
